The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
