Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
